About this site
What Cat Breed is a free cat breed identifier that works from one photo. It is built and run by 1000 Ventures, a small team that makes free, simple tools for questions people search for every day.
Why we built it
"What breed is my cat?" is one of the first questions people ask about a new cat, especially a rescue. Most quizzes online ask about personality and guess a breed from that, which says more about the owner than the cat. We wanted a tool that looks at the actual cat and gives an honest answer, including the answer most people get: a classic house cat.
We already run What Breed Is My Dog, a dog breed scanner, so this site uses the same idea and the same look, with a model trained only on cats.
How the scanner works
We trained our own model on more than 50,000 cleaned and labeled cat photos and tested it on thousands it had never seen. The method page has the details and the accuracy for every breed, including where it still makes mistakes.
What this site is not
We are not vets or cat show judges, and a result is not a pedigree. The scanner describes what your cat looks like. For questions about your cat's health, see a vet.
Who runs it
1000 Ventures builds and maintains this site along with other free tools, which you can find on our other tools page. The breed photos on this site are illustrations we created for it.
